Security Guards Form New STA Chapter

The newest chapter of the STA was formed when the district’s board of education voted to recognize the Sayville Security Guards Chapter of the STA. Nearly every member of the group’s approximately 19 members signed cards requesting representation by the new unit.

“Even in a situation with a school board and administration that shows respect for the employees, people feel that they need a voice at work. That is what a union can do for its members, explained STA President Tim Southerton.
NYSUT Labor Relations Specialist Sean Callahan has been working with the Chapter’s Chairs, Brian Alimena and Jim Elder, and the members of the unit to begin crafting proposals to exchange with the district for their first contract. The new chapter’s contract will be separate and apart from the other units represented by the STA. The STA and NYSUT have provided support and training for the group and its leaders.

“On behalf of all of the members of our union, we welcome our new union brothers and will do all that we can to help their chapter flourish,” added Southerton.
