Why should I join?
By joining the union, you help make it stronger. As a member of the union, you will be involved in various STA activities; you have the right to attend representative council meetings and can vote for contracts and union leadership. You become part of the reason our district is noted for its excellence and diversity.
How are my dues paid?
STA dues are automatically deducted for 10 pay periods starting in October. Your dues are used to support the activities of our local union as well as New York State United Teachers, American Federation of Teachers, and the National Education Association, our state and national affiliates.
What is NYSUT?
Our local union is part of the 600,000+ member New York State United Teachers (NYSUT). By joining the STA, you automatically become a member of NYSUT. Affiliation with NYSUT brings many advantages to the STA including access to legal counsel, labor relations specialists, workshops, and training opportunities. As an individual member, you will benefit by receiving its publication, the New York Teacher, as well as opportunities for money saving benefits, such as insurance and mortgages. For more information about NYSUT, visit their website at www.nysut.org.
What are Building Reps?
In every building there are members who have been elected to serve as STA Building Representatives. These members are the "face of the Union" in each building. Members should seek out their Building Representatives with any questions or concerns they may have. The Reps are more than willing to help answer your questions or provide guidance. All discussion with Building Representatives are kept confidential.
What is VOTE/COPE? What does it do?
VOTE/COPE is the non-partisan political action committee formed by NYSUT to work in Washington and Albany on behalf of its member's interests. It is funded entirely by voluntary donations; no dues money is spent on any political activities.
VOTE/COPE endorses candidates regardless of party affiliation, considering only their stance on issues directly related to education, labor, and health care. Additionally, VOTE/COPE rebates a portion of the money it collects from us back to use in school budget or school board elections or other appropriate functions.
All members are encouraged to contribute to VOTE/COPE through payroll deduction.
